BETWEEN HOPE AND FEAR

Maybe we often do good deeds. Then after that comes a feeling of pride because it has done good. Imam Al-Ghozali suggested that every believer who finished doing a good deed should be followed by feelings of roja and khauf. Roja means a great hope that the good deeds will be accepted by Allah SWT. We believe that Allah SWT is Forgiving, Most Merciful, especially to those who believe.

The basis for this roja and khauf is the call of Allah SWT in Surah Al-Hijr verses 49-50. “Tell My servants that Verily I am the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. And that Verily My punishment is a very painful punishment.” (QS. Al Hijr: 49-50)

Rasulullah SAW was asked to inform the servants of Allah SWT that Allah SWT is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. But on the contrary, it is also necessary to know that in fact Allah’s punishment is very painful and painful.

The first verse teaches roja, hoping for forgiveness and mercy from Allah SWT. The good deeds that we have done, there may be imperfections, but we hope that our shortcomings will be forgiven by Allah. We also hope that our deeds will be accepted by Allah SWT because we believe that Allah’s mercy is greater than His wrath. By having a strong sense of roja, we will be devoted to Allah. And, Rasulullah SAW said that Allah SWT depends on the prediction of His servants. As stated in the hadith qudsi, “Allah SWT said, ‘I depend on what my servant thinks of Me.’ (Narrated by Bukhari)

While the second verse, commands to be afraid of the threat and punishment of Allah SWT which is very painful.
