Dhikr, Anyone Can! 

أَحَبُّ اْلأَعْمَالِ إِلىَ اللهِ أَنْ تَمُوْتَ وَلِسَانُكَ رَطْبٌ مِنْ ذِكْرِ اللهِ (رَوَاهُ البَيْهَقِى عَنْ مُعَاذْ)

The practice that Allah SWT loves the most is when you die. Your mouth is still wet from the remembrance of Allah SWT.


Dhikr is the essence of every practice. A prayer which is the most basic of worship even though the primary purpose is dhikr, Allah SWT says, which means, “Establish prayer for remembrance” (Surat: Toha, verse: 14). As long as we pray, we dhikr to Allah SWT, we realize that we are standing before Allah and this is called hudhur (present) and if accompanied by silence (calm), obedient and submissive it is called khusyu’. Huzoor and humility are the essence of prayer, and this is also the essence of dhikr.

One of the privileges of dhikr worship is that rules and time do not bind it, so dhikr is absolute worship whenever time can do it. Even people who want to defecate can do dhikr. They recite their dhikr before entering the toilet, when they are inside, their heart can also do dhikr (bil qolbi) by mentioning the names of Allah SWT and when having sex with the wife (jima’), the heart we can dhikr to Allah SWT.

Because dhikr is absolute worship anytime, anywhere and can be done by anyone, pious people can also dhikr, ordinary people can also do dhikr, holy people can dhikr during menstruation, postpartum can also do dhikr, rich people can dhikr, poor people can also dhikr, healthy people can dhikr disabled and sick people can also do dhikr differently from other practices.

Sadaqah is important but only rich people can do it, teaching is also essential but only pious people can, jihad is also afdal (main) but only strong and healthy people can do it, as well as praying in congregation while dhikr can be done anytime, anywhere and by anyone.
